In a piece of life story of the Prophet, he interacts with various people. Including sinners people who do not believe and their close friends. This interaction creates great benefits that never end Muslims for all ages. Of course this is the grace of Allah ﷻ to His Prophet ﷺ and shows the perfection of human nature.
One of the example of the Prophet ﷺ in addressing sinners is respecting his honesty. There is a history of Hathib bin Abi Balta’ah, a friend of the Prophet ﷺ who committed a big sin and a fatal mistake that could endanger the Muslims as well as the Prophet ﷺ. Hathib Radhiyallahu anhu once leaked the secrets of military power and the strategy of the Islamic State to the Makkah Musyrikin. Quoted from Sahih Muslim (no. 4550) Told Ali Radhiyallahu anhu, that he had been sent by the Prophet ﷺ along with two other friends to pursue a woman who was carrying a letter out of Medina. The woman did not confess, then with a little coercion, the woman also issued a letter whose contents,
“From Hathib bin Abu Balta’ah to the infidel of Quraish Mecca about some of the Prophet’s affairs. The Prophet asked, ‘O Hathib, what is this?’ Hathib answered, ‘o Messenger of Allah, don’t be in a hurry!
Then the Prophet said, ‘You are honest!’ Then Umar said, ‘O Allah’s messenger, let me cut off this Munafiq neck!’ He said, ‘Indeed, he (Hathib) has followed the battle of Badr. Do you not know that God can see those who follow the Badr War and say (which means), ‘Do As you like, in fact I have forgiven you!’ ‘
From the story of the Hathib above, some benefits can be taken, including:
Story (confirm) and tabayyun (clarify)
Rasulullah ﷺ when getting the reality of the contents of the letter did not directly punish Hathib Radhiyallahu anhu. However, the Prophet ﷺ confirmed its contents and then clarified it to Hathib. This is the prophet’s adab ﷺ in receiving news and responding to the sinners. As we have made it in the story of friends who have sex during the daytime Ramadan (writing bag 1), the Prophet ﷺ also clearly confirmed to the person. Prophet ﷺ ensured that what was done was truly sin and clarified the reasons behind it.
In the context of the Hathib story Radhiyallahu anhu, The Prophet ﷺ has received certainty from the plan to divulge the secret of the state from the direction of the journey of the woman courier, as well as its contents that mention the name of Hathib and related to the State Strategy. So, the Prophet ﷺ also did the second stage, namely tabayyun With Hathib Radhiyallahu anhu.
This is a beautiful Islamic moral in addressing various problems. A problem should be placed in its place, both in terms of intelligence and the volume of the problem. This can be done by ensuring that the problem really occurs, and find information or reasons behind that happens. The two moral foundations are At-Tatsabbut And At-tabayyun. This is a great moral, may Allah ﷻ give us the opportunity to discuss it and take the benefits from the knowledge of Allah ﷻ.
Appreciate honesty
After the Prophet ﷺ asked for clarification, Hathib Radhiyallahu anhu also gave clarification and explained the reason. It turns out Hathib Radhiyallahu anhu Do it because he is worried about his family, namely children, wives, and relatives who are still in Makkah. He does not have a family protector there, while the friends of the other Prophet ﷺ have it. So, Hathib Radhiyallahu anhu Also doing this so that his family gets protection or at least relieve the worry of Hathib over the dangers that haunt their families.
Really hatib Radhiyallahu anhu Honest for the reason, this is what emerged from Hathib’s statement Radhiyallahu anhu And this is what the Prophet judged ﷺ. Rasulullah ﷺ accepted the clarification and appreciated his honesty Hathib Radhiyallahu anhu. The price of honesty next to the Prophet ﷺ is very large. For honest sinners, the Prophet ﷺ gave his broad grace. Look at the similarity of the story between the Prophet’s friends who have committed adultery and acknowledged their mistakes, as well as the story of Kaab Bin Malik who admitted that he was not warred? All of these stories have the basis of honesty from the culprit and good results on them. In the story of their adultery friends, the Prophet defended them and explained that they were so great before God. In the story of Kaab, he has ended in a good ending and an epic repentance.
Someone appreciates the honesty of the perpetrators of sin. Because this is a very difficult thing to do. If it does not come from a heart that believes in God As-sami ‘al-Bashir al-Aleim, Of course sinners will bear and cover up their sins or even lie. However, his faith in his Lord made them track the law Let me from a heavy Shari’a. Honesty is also a sign that the perpetrator is more frightening in the hereafter than in the world. So it can be seen on its side, the afterlife village is more valuable than the world. This is a big faith, of course the value is not light. So, it is appropriate to respect the honesty.
Remembering the services and position
Rasulullah ﷺ After confirming the clarification of Hathib, he also associated it with his services and position Radhiyallahu anhu. When Umar Radhiyallahu anhu Want to cut off his head, the Prophet ﷺ reminded about the service and the position of Hathib Radhiyallahu anhu In the Badr War. Until Umar Radhiyallahu anhu Crying remembering his position that feels like beyond the knowledge of the Prophet ﷺ.
This is also the art of responding to a beautiful sinner and is very worthy of emotion. A sin does not make a person’s services and position lost. Hathib Radhiyallahu anhu, However the sins are, still someone who has struggled in the battle of Badr. Not only the Prophet ﷺ who appreciates his services, but Allah ﷻ appreciates his services as it is,
Do what you want, I have forgiven you
“Do you like you, I’ve forgiven you.”
So, as a Muslim should not make it easy to eliminate the services of others just because the person is sinful. It is possible that sin is very big, maybe sin is fatal as Hathib has done Radhiyallahu anhu, But sin is not always beneficial for the disappearance. This is a form of justice. And the best example in practicing justice on the human side is Imamul Anbiyar, Rasulullah ﷺ.
Put forward love over justice
The last principle we can learn from the short description is the glasses of affection used by the Prophet ﷺ to see this case. Sometimes what is this reason cannot be accepted by everyone, including Umar Radhiyallahu anhu who have intelligence and authority. However, the Prophet ﷺ saw it with a mercy, trying to empathize and understand the anxiety of Hathib Radhiyallahu anhu, A restless father protects his family.
Now, imagine you have children and wives who are vulnerable to staying in Gaza. How do you feel? Especially if the offer of family protection comes if you tell your country’s secrets, whereas if not, then your family is threatened? Of course this is a temptation that is not easy. If this is what Hathib experienced Radhiyallahu anhu.
So, a Muslim is not justifying his mistakes, but puts forward empathy to try to understand the state of the perpetrator. That way, the door of communication will open, to dialogue and invite him to repent. Of course this is not easy either, because our rationality is sometimes blocked by emotions that light up at that time. However, it is really perfect Exemplary Rasulullah ﷺ. Despite the reason the Prophet ﷺ is valid because of this vital problem, and Umar Radhiyallahu anhu which is also ignited by emotions, the Prophet ﷺ can still be rational and forgiveness Radhiyallahu anhu Without scratching it at all. Even the Prophet raised his title by reminding his services to Umar Radhiyallahu anhu.
We benefit from Prof. Dr. Raghib as Sirjani Hafizhahullah“Justice may have dropped a punishment on Hathib bin Balta’ah Radhiyallahu anhu. However, affection can see a business with a broader scope. So we see who is doing an action, how the history of his life is, what is his precedent, what is his past, whether he is a good person or not, and what is the background he does that.
Love does not mean that it leads to pity to punish. However, search quickly a solution to get a person out of trouble or problem that ensnared him.
Justice is a big level … but greater mercy
Justice is a big degree, but more affection. ” (Ar-Rahmah Fi Hayati Rasulllah, matter. 116)
